When to use it

Turn a big GIF sticker into a small still image

If you only need the picture and not the movement, drop the GIF, set "Output format" to WEBP and keep "Quality" near 80. The result is one still frame that is often a fraction of the original size.

Prepare many GIF thumbnails for a web page

Drop a folder of GIFs at once, set "Max size (longest side)" to 800 px and press "Convert". The before and after totals show how much space you saved, and "Download all (ZIP)" gives you everything in one file.

Make a GIF fit an upload limit as a picture

When a form rejects a GIF for being too large and a still image is acceptable, choose "Target size", type the limit in "Make each file under" and convert to JPG or WEBP. The tool lowers quality until the file fits.

How to use

  1. Drop GIF images into the box or click to choose them.
  2. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP as the output format. Adjust quality for JPG/WebP.
  3. Press Convert and download compressed images individually or as a ZIP.

How it works

Each GIF image is decoded by your browser and drawn onto an HTML Canvas. The canvas is then re-encoded in your chosen format. Converting a static GIF to JPG or WebP can reduce file size by 60-90% because these formats use much more efficient compression than GIF. Note that this tool converts the first frame of animated GIFs. For animated GIF editing, use the GIF Maker tool. Everything runs locally in your browser. How to verify. Also available as a free REST API for developers and AI agents (edge-processed, zero retention).

FAQ

Can this compress animated GIFs?

This tool converts the first frame of animated GIFs. For animated GIF compression, use the GIF Maker tool where you can reduce width and frame rate to shrink the file.

Which output format is best?

WebP gives the smallest files. JPG is best for photos. PNG is lossless and best for graphics with sharp edges and flat colors.

How much smaller will the file be?

Converting a static GIF to JPG at 80% quality typically reduces file size by 60-90%, depending on the image content.

Can I process many GIFs at once?

Yes. Drop or select multiple files. They are all converted and can be downloaded individually or as a ZIP.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Files never leave your device.

Will the result still be animated?

No. This page re-saves each GIF as a single JPG, PNG or WEBP picture, so the movement is lost. To keep an animation, rebuild a shorter or smaller one with the video to GIF tool using fewer frames per second or a narrower width.

Can I set a maximum size in KB?

Yes. Under "Compression" pick "Target size" and enter the limit in "Make each file under". Quality is lowered automatically, and if needed the dimensions shrink too. This works for JPG and WEBP output, not PNG.

Does it support GIF output with fewer colors?

No. There is no GIF output at all, only JPG, PNG and WEBP. For a smaller animated file, use the video to GIF tool and lower the width or the frame rate.
