Free OCR Online - Extract Text from Images
Extract text from images, screenshots and scanned documents using free online OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Supports English and Korean. Drop an image or paste a screenshot, choose the language, and press Read text. The recognized text can be copied, edited, or downloaded as a .txt file. The first run downloads a small recognition model (1-3 MB per language); after that it works instantly. Everything runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded to any server.

When to use it
Copy text out of a screenshot
Press Ctrl+V on the page or use "Paste from clipboard" to bring in the screenshot, keep the language on English and press "Read text". Use "Copy" to put the result on your clipboard.
Read a photo of a printed page
Take the photo straight on and in good light, drop it in, and press "Read text". Fix any mistakes directly in the box, then "Download .txt" to keep a copy.
Mixed Korean and English notes
If a page has both scripts, pick "Korean + English" under "Language in the image". One setting that matches the picture usually gives better results than leaving the wrong language selected.
How to use
- Drop an image (screenshot, photo or scan) into the box or paste from clipboard with Ctrl+V.
- Choose the language in the image (English, Korean, or both).
- Press Read text. The recognized text appears and can be copied or downloaded.
How it works
This tool uses Tesseract.js, a JavaScript port of the Tesseract OCR engine, running entirely in your browser. On the first use, recognition data (about 1-3 MB per language) is downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN and cached in your browser for faster subsequent runs. The image is processed locally: it is preprocessed for contrast and alignment, then text is recognized character by character. Your images are never sent to any server, making this safe for sensitive documents. How to verify. Also available as a free REST API for developers and AI agents (edge-processed, zero retention).

FAQ
What languages are supported?
English and Korean. Choose "Korean + English" for documents that mix both. More languages may be added in the future.
How accurate is the OCR?
Accuracy depends on image quality. Clear, high-contrast text with good resolution gives the best results. Handwritten text and very small fonts are harder to recognize.
Can I OCR a screenshot?
Yes. Paste a screenshot directly from your clipboard with Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac), or drop an image file.
Does it work offline after the first run?
Yes, once the recognition data is cached in your browser. Subsequent runs do not need an internet connection.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using Tesseract.js. Your images never leave your device.
What affects accuracy most?
Image sharpness and contrast. A straight, well-lit picture with printed text reads best. The result shows an "estimated accuracy" percentage so you can judge how much checking is needed.
Why does the first run take longer?
The recognition data for the chosen language (about 1 to 3 MB) is downloaded once from a CDN and saved in your browser. Your image itself is never uploaded.
Can it read handwriting or other languages?
It is built for printed text and offers English, Korean, or both. Handwriting and other languages are not supported, so results there will be poor or empty.
