PDF to Word (DOCX) Free - No Upload

Convert a PDF to an editable Word document right in your browser. Text, reading order and embedded images are extracted and packaged into a standard DOCX file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. No upload, no sign-up, no watermark. Your file never leaves your device.

When to use it

Fix wording in a report you received

Upload a PDF whose text can be selected and the tool reads each page and groups lines into paragraphs. Press “Download DOCX”, open it in Word and edit the sentences you need. Fonts may differ from the original.

Edit in Google Docs or LibreOffice

The DOCX also opens in Google Docs, LibreOffice and Hancom Office. Open it in the program you use and tidy up line spacing or image positions.

When the tables matter

Tables come out as aligned text here. If you need to calculate with the numbers, run the file through PDF to Excel instead, which extracts the table itself.

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF into the box or click to choose one.
  2. Wait while text and images are extracted from each page. Progress is shown as each page is processed.
  3. The DOCX downloads automatically. Open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice to edit the text.

How it works

The PDF is parsed in your browser using Mozilla's pdf.js library, which reads each page and extracts text items with their positions and font sizes. Text items are grouped into lines by vertical position and assembled into paragraphs. Embedded images are extracted from the PDF's internal streams and rendered to PNG via HTML Canvas. The resulting text and images are then packaged into a standard Office Open XML (OOXML) document, which is the native format for .docx files. The ZIP archive is created with fflate, a fast JavaScript compression library. Everything runs client-side, so your PDF is never sent to any server. How to verify. Also available as a free REST API for developers and AI agents (edge-processed, zero retention).

Limitations

Because this runs entirely in the browser without server-side processing, some aspects of complex PDFs may not convert perfectly:

For best results, this tool works well with text-heavy PDFs like reports, articles and simple documents. It is not a replacement for professional OCR or layout reconstruction tools.

FAQ

Does this convert PDF to an editable Word document?

Yes. Text is extracted as editable paragraphs and images are embedded in the DOCX. You can open the result in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice Writer.

Will the layout match the original PDF exactly?

Not perfectly. Text content and reading order are preserved, but complex layouts like multi-column pages, precise positioning, custom fonts and form fields may differ. This is a fundamental limitation of browser-based conversion without server-side processing.

What about tables in the PDF?

Simple text tables are converted as paragraphs with preserved text. For complex tables with borders and merged cells, the structure may not be fully recreated. Consider PDF to Excel for tabular data.

Are images from the PDF included?

Yes. Embedded images are extracted and placed in the Word document. However, their exact position may differ from the original PDF layout.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The entire conversion runs in your browser using pdf.js and fflate. Your PDF never leaves your device.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

This tool works on PDFs that contain real text, so text inside scanned pages is not read. First make the PDF searchable with the OCR PDF tool, then convert it. Pictures of text may come through as images.

What if the PDF is password-protected?

You will see “This PDF is password-protected.” Unlock it first with the Unlock PDF tool, using the password you know, and upload the unlocked copy.

Can I convert only certain pages?

There is no page selector. Use the save-selected-pages option in Organize PDF Pages to make a PDF with the pages you need, then convert that.

Does each PDF page become its own Word page?

Yes. A page break is added wherever the PDF changes page. The document is created as A4 with 2.54 cm margins, so the page breaks are kept even if the original page size was different.

What happens to large headings?

Lines set at 16 pt or larger are made bold. Word heading styles such as Heading 1 are not applied automatically, so apply them yourself after converting if you need a table of contents.
