URL Encoder / Decoder Free Online

Encode special characters in URLs to percent-encoded format (e.g., space becomes %20) or decode percent-encoded URLs back to readable text. The tool converts automatically as you type. Copy the result with one click. Everything runs in your browser with no upload. Essential for web developers, API testing, and debugging URL parameters.

When to use it

Put a search term in a query string

Choose "Encode" and type just the value, for example a Korean search term. The percent-encoded text appears at once, and you can copy it onto the end of a link after ?q=.

Read a link full of percent signs

Choose "Decode" and paste a link that shows %EC%95%88... in a chat or forum. It turns back into readable text as you paste.

A value contains & or =

An & inside a value cuts the link short. Encode only that value so the & becomes %26, then add it to the link.

How to use

  1. Choose Encode or Decode mode.
  2. Type or paste text in the input box. The result appears automatically.
  3. Copy the result with the Copy button.

How it works

URL encoding uses the browser's built-in encodeURIComponent() function, which converts characters that are not allowed in URLs (spaces, &, =, /, etc.) to their percent-encoded equivalents. Decoding uses decodeURIComponent() to reverse the process. The conversion runs entirely in JavaScript in your browser, so nothing is sent to a server. How to verify. Also available as a free REST API for developers and AI agents (edge-processed, zero retention).

FAQ

What characters are encoded?

All characters except A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, _, ., and ~ are converted to percent-encoded format (e.g., space becomes %20, & becomes %26).

Does it handle Unicode?

Yes. Characters like Korean, Chinese, emoji and accented letters are encoded as multi-byte UTF-8 sequences.

What is the difference from encodeURI?

This tool uses encodeURIComponent, which encodes everything including /, ?, &, and =. Use it for individual URL parameters, not full URLs.

Does it auto-convert?

Yes. The output updates as you type, so you can see the result immediately.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser.

Does a space become %20 or +?

It becomes %20. When decoding, a + is left as a plus sign rather than turned into a space.

Can I encode a whole web address?

You can, but the separators like :, / ? and = are encoded too, so https:// shows as https%3A%2F%2F. Encode just the parameter value instead.

What if I encode text that is already encoded?

The % signs become %25 (a %20 turns into %2520). Text encoded twice has to be decoded twice to get back the original.
