When to use it
Reaction GIF from a short clip
Drop the video, set "Start" and "End" a few seconds apart, choose 10 for "Frames per second (fps)" and press "Make GIF". Keep "Loop forever" ticked for a repeating clip.
Quick tutorial snippet
Play the video, pause at the first moment and press "Use current position" for "Start", then do the same for "End". Pick a slightly higher fps such as 12 so mouse movement looks smooth.
Lighter GIF for chat
Lower fps to 8, choose a narrow "Width" and leave "Speed" at normal. The "Estimated size" next to the button helps you judge it before you wait for the result.
How to use
- Drop a video file (MP4, MOV, WebM) into the box or click to choose one. The video player loads instantly.
- Set the start and end times to select the segment you want. Play the video and press "Use current position" for precise timing. Choose a width (320-480 px is ideal for small file sizes) and fps (10 fps is smooth enough for most uses).
- Press "Make GIF." A preview appears when it's done. Download the finished GIF directly.
How it works
The video plays in your browser's native video player. At conversion time, frames are captured at your chosen fps by seeking through the video and drawing each frame onto an HTML Canvas. The gifenc library encodes these frames into an animated GIF using LZW compression with an optimized color palette. Everything runs client-side in JavaScript, so the video file is never uploaded to a server. For large or long videos, consider reducing the width or fps to keep file size manageable, because GIF uses an older compression algorithm that produces much larger files than modern video codecs. FAQ
What video formats can I convert to GIF?
MP4 (H.264), MOV and WebM work in most browsers. HEVC videos from iPhones may only work in Safari. The video plays in your browser, so any format your browser can play will work.
How do I keep the GIF file small?
Use a width of 320-480 px, 10 fps, and keep the clip under 5 seconds. GIF is an old format with weak compression, so shorter and smaller is better. For longer clips, consider using the video compressor instead.
Is there a watermark on the GIF?
No. The GIF is clean with no watermark, branding or sign-up required.
Can I trim the video before making a GIF?
Yes. Set the start and end time, or play the video and press "Use current position" to mark the exact moment. Only the trimmed portion is converted to GIF.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript (gifenc). It never leaves your device.
Why does the tool say my clip is too long?
A GIF is limited to 300 frames. Frames equal duration times fps, so shorten the clip or lower the fps and the full clip will fit.
Which video formats work?
MP4, MOV and WEBM from the file picker, plus M4V and MKV. If the browser cannot play the video, the page says so. MP4 with H.264 and WEBM are the safest.
Can I add text or crop the picture?
No. The tool trims, resizes, sets frame rate and speed, and loops. It has no text, sticker or crop controls.
