Ever moved a photo from your iPhone to a Windows PC and found it's a .heic file that won't open, or tried to attach it to a website and got a "file type not supported" error? HEIC is the default photo format on iPhone, but Windows and most websites still expect JPG by default.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is an image format based on the HEIF standard. iPhone has used it as the default camera format since iOS 11. At the same quality, it's roughly half the file size of JPG, which saves storage space — but it causes compatibility problems on Windows (before version 1809) and older software.
Convert HEIC to JPG with Dagochim
- Open the Image Format Converter tool.
- Drag in your HEIC file(s), or click to select. You can pick multiple files at once.
- Choose JPG as the output format.
- Adjust the quality. The default (85-90%) is enough for most uses.
- Download the converted JPG files. If you converted several, you can download them all as a ZIP.
Shoot in JPG on your iPhone from the start
You can switch the capture format in your iPhone settings:
- Settings → Camera → Formats
- Select Most Compatible (this shoots in JPG/H.264)
"High Efficiency" saves as HEIC/HEVC, which is smaller but less compatible. If you often transfer photos to a PC, "Most Compatible" is more convenient.
Automatic conversion when sending from your phone
When you send photos from your iPhone via AirDrop, email, or messaging apps, they're usually converted to JPG automatically on the way out. But if you copy files directly over USB, or download originals from iCloud, they arrive as HEIC as-is. That's where Dagochim's converter comes in handy.
Opening HEIC on Windows 10/11
On Windows 10 (version 1809+) and Windows 11, installing the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store lets Photos and File Explorer open HEIC files directly. But you'll often still need a JPG version to attach to a website or use in other software.
Is my data safe?
Yes. All conversion happens entirely inside your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to a server, so you can convert personal photos with confidence.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting HEIC to JPG lower the quality?
There's a small amount of recompression, but at 85-90% quality the difference is hard to notice with the naked eye. If you're worried about quality loss, you can convert to PNG instead (though the file size will be larger).
Can I convert HEIC video (HEVC) too?
This tool is for image formats only. For video (HEVC/H.265), use Dagochim's Video Compressor to convert to MP4 (H.264).
Does EXIF data (date, GPS) survive the conversion?
By default, the shooting date and camera info are kept. For privacy, if you want to strip GPS location data, turn on the remove-EXIF option during conversion.
