How to Copy Text from an HWP File (and Translate It)

Get the body text out of a Korean .hwp document so you can translate, quote or search it.

Updated 2026-10-25

If you received a Korean HWP document and only need its words, for example to run them through a translator, you don't have to convert the whole layout. The HWP Viewer has a Copy text button that copies the body text.

Step by step

  1. Open the HWP Viewer & HWP to PDF page and drop in the .hwp or .hwpx file.
  2. Press Copy text. The page tells you how many characters were copied.
  3. Paste the text wherever you need it. If your browser doesn't allow clipboard access, a TXT file is saved instead.

Copy text skips tables' layout and pictures. If you need the document to look the same, save it as PDF instead, and if you need selectable text in that PDF, use Print and choose "Save as PDF".

Translating a whole document

If you'd rather keep the page layout, save the HWP as a PDF first and then use the free PDF Translate tool (English and Korean), which also runs in your browser.

Going the other way

Need to send an HWP back? Edit the text with the HWP Editor, or turn a PDF into an editable HWPX with PDF to HWP.

FAQ

Is the text sent anywhere?

No. The document is opened in your browser and the text goes only to your clipboard or a TXT file on your device.

Does it work with password-protected files?

Yes, once you type the document password. Files locked by a company DRM program cannot be opened.
